Barry-Wehmiller Companies has made its first acquisition in France claiming its annual revenue will hit $1.7bn in 2014.

Arcil, which supplies Danone, makes machinery for the dairy industry, such as yogurt cups from plastic and fills and seals them. It is based in Paris and has 350 staff.

A spokesman for Barry-Wehmiller confirmed the acquisition with FoodProductionDaily.

$120m revenue

The deal means the firm will have six operating companies and will enhance its 65 capital equipment and engineering consulting businesses, with 7,500 employees, across the yogurt industry.

“We closed on the Arcil deal on Friday, December 6,” added the spokesman. The financial agreements of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the company has $120m in annual revenue.

Bob Chapman, CEO, Barry-Wehmiller, said Arcil’s expertise in providing technology such as its Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) will complement its portfolio of packaging companies as yogurt is a growing market in the US, Russia, China and India because of its health benefits.

Acril’s machines use heat to convert plastic film into custom-formed cups that are filled then sealed.

Their technological leadership and market position extend our capabilities in the global fresh dairy market,” he added.

Arcil is Barry-Wehmiller’s 65th acquisition. Through its combination of acquisition and organic growth initiatives, its revenues will surpass the $2bn mark within two years.

Eric Lesbats, CEO, Arcil, said it was looking forward to enhancing its past success with the experiences of Barry-Wehmiller. It will continue to sell to Danone and other yogurt producers worldwide.

We are confident Arcil will be further strengthened within the Barry-Wehmiller culture and our market position in global markets will grow,” said Lesbats.
