Packaging will be a new and important market in the future with increasing emphasis on clarity, according to Metabolix.

Bob Engle, vice president business and commercial development, told FoodProductionDaily.com their clear compostable bag gives them a unique position in the market.

"There aren't a lot of clear materials out there, it's not that everybody wants a clear compostable bag but there are some people that really do want clarity in the bag, the idea is so they can see what is in there and make a determination is this something you want in your composter," he said at the EU Bioplastics Conference 2013 in Berlin.

Metabolix said that Mirel biopolymers are currently produced at a 100 ton pilot plant in North America, but within one or two years they are planning production in the EU up to 2KT and moving up to 10KT further down the line.

The firm highlighted its Mvera B5010 and B5011 blown film grades which are compostable and its PVC and PLA modifiers with benefits including toughness, flexibility and recycling improvement for a PVC grade.

Engle said B5009, to be launched next year, is an extension to their recently unveiled grade B5011 that will be a clear compostable film adding different physical properties such as being stiffer and offering HDPE-like performance.
