HH Global and Parkside Flexibles (Europe) has launched a peelable lid for the ready meal market.

'Lidd’ uses a two layer laminated film to seal a product and display marketing information such as branding and nutritional facts. It claims to save over 45% on packaging weight.

Richard Turnbull, business development manager, speciality packaging division, Parkside Flexibles (Europe), told FoodProductionDaily, the product reduces packaging and operational costs in an ever growing ready meals market.

Advances in adhesives

Lidd has taken huge advances in adhesive technology to generate the easy peel feature, combining this with specialist films for both layers was a real challenge for Parkside and only through our ongoing investment program are developments of this nature possible,” he added.

Speaking about the name of the product, Turnbull said ‘It’s a simple but accurate description and only requires a short URL which we purchased and plan to launch as www.lidd.com in 2014’.

One of the challenges faced by the packaging industry is the need to develop ever more innovative products, which add value to both our own sector and that of the brand owner, packer and the retailer,” he said.

Cardboard sleeves

The peelable lid can be used in the ambient/chilled or frozen market on plastic, aluminium or paper/plastic tray material.

HH Global has been working with a major food group to introduce Lidd to product lines totalling 100 million+ units per year.

The associated packaging weight reduction from utilizing the product is expected to be 600 tons per year, with a cost saving of nearly $1m PA.

Tony Massey, CMO, HH Global said the product takes away the need for a cardboard sleeve on the production line, which can reduce traditional manual handling costs and bottlenecks.

Parkside Flexibles Group will be attending the Packaging Innovation tradeshow at Birmingham NEC, UK on February 26 and 27, 2014.
