People convicted of food safety crimes in Beijing could be handed be a life ban from the food industry under the proposed revision of legislation in China’s capital.
The Beijing Food Safety Regulation draft amendment, which is open to comment until 25 April 2012, states that anyone convicted of a food safety crime in the city will be banned for life.
Under current regulations, which were last updated in 2007, those whose licenses were revoked were banned from the food business for three years. Under the amendment, this would also be extended to five years.
The draft also includes specific regulations on emerging food crimes such as the production and sale of ‘gutter oil’.
The food safety law amendment states: “Those who have been convicted of food safety crimes shall never again be engaged in the industry.”
