Sonoco Plastics won a first-place award for its light-weight, sustainable Planters jar, composed of PET.
A Sonoco Plastics package has landed first-place honors for its design and sustainability.

The PET blow-molded package that the company created for Planters peanuts landed first-place honors at the Society of Plastics Engineers’ 29th annual Blow Molding Conference. The container topped the awards’ Advanced Food Packaging Applications category.

The winning package is a plastic jar that replaced Planters 16-oz and 20-oz glass jar. The lightweight plastic container reportedly satisfied the brand owner’s performance targets for capacity, clarity and shelf life while reducing packaging weight by 84%.

"This award clearly demonstrates Sonoco Plastics' commitment to satisfy our customers with innovative and sustainable solutions that meet their needs," said Steve Gendreau, division vice president and general manager of Sonoco Plastics’ Blow Molding division.

The reduced-weight packaging helps increase the snack container’s overall sustainability by reducing material use and shaving off transportation costs. Further, the package is recyclable and does not contain BPA.

The Society of Plastics Engineers is a professional organization composed of approximately 20,000 members worldwide. Members work to design and create food packaging, medical devices, industrial components and other plastic products.
