Corbion and Perstorp target hot melt adhesive applications
The Capa product is expected to be commercially available in the final quarter of 2015 and will be brought to market by Corbion.
It is part of Perstorp’s Capa Lactide as the two companies work in the respective fields of caprolactones (Perstorp) and lactides (Corbion).
Safer and more sustainable option
The packaging industry is currently using EVA or mPE-based hotmelt adhesives but now have the option of using this alternative, said the firms.
Håkan Björnberg, vice president innovation at Perstorp, said the product results from a partnership agreement both companies signed in 2011.
“Perstorp and Corbion have jointly scouted the general benefits of our new Capa/Lactide technology,” he told FoodProductionDaily.
“Hotmelt adhesives is an area where we believe this technology will meet the demand for safer and sustainable products without sacrificing on adhesive performance and achieve compostable solutions as an added benefit.
“The lactide contribute with the renewable content. We are mainly focusing on the performance of the products and regard the renewable content as an additional benefit.”
Partnership work
Perstorp said it delivers no compromise on performance and allows formulators to remain competitive – asked how it does this, the firm said it will come back with facts later this year.
The firms said it is expected to be the first in a series of launches for the adhesive industry from the partnership but would not give further detail.
The product has a renewable content exceeding 80% thanks to the lactide and is fully compostable according to the EN13432 standard and could be certified by Vincotte.
Perstorp is already producing Capa/Lactide products in the UK so Capa can run on existing equipment.
Marco Bootz, Corbion’s senior vice president Biochemicals, said the material represented the culmination of two years’ joint development work with Perstorp.
“It will create a strong technology platform for the development of polymers that provide a genuine alternative to traditional materials like EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and mPE (metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene) for the adhesive industry.”
Henkel adhesive products
Meanwhile, Henkel recently launched Loctite Liofol LA 2760 / LA 5891-21 and Loctite Liofol LA 2760 / LA 7371.
The modular aliphatic adhesives are for high performance retort processing and demanding flexible packaging applications.
With one system for inner and outer layer Henkel´s LA 2760 / LA 5891-21 grants FDA 177.1390 compliance while Loctite Liofol LA 2760 / LA 7371 allows curing at room temperature.
Loctite Liofol LA 2760 / LA 5891-21 and LA 2760 / LA 7371 are suitable for retort applications up to 60 minutes and a temperature up to 134 degrees Celsius.
Since the adhesives are based on aliphatic isocyanate starting materials they do not require testing for primary aromatic amines.
Stefan Tomke, technical manager at Henkel, said: “The new modular aliphatic adhesive system is dedicated for high performance applications covering low migration and fast curing products.
“It offers high reliability and sustainability for food and non-food packaging and delivers best results for film/film structures including SiOx [silicon oxide] or AlOx [aluminium oxide]-coated barrier films and, film/foil structures.”
