Manufacturers can slash outer case packaging by as much as 25% thanks to a novel box design from DS Smith Packaging that boosts stacking strength and stability in transit.

The company demonstrated the innovation on a vibration table at its stand at packaging materials and technology trade show Emballage in Paris last week.

DS Smith development & marketing director for France Gerard Mathieu told FoodProductionDaily.com the design feature enabled processors to cut their carbon footprint by reducing the packaging they used.

The case concept works by simply matching corner tabs on the bottom of boxes into slots at the top of boxes they are stacked on. As a result, stacking strength and stability is increased, meaning case packaging can be lighter and slipping and sliding can still be prevented.

Mathieu said DS Smith offered several designs of boxes using the concept and it had attracted a lot of attention at the show. "There has been very big interest, because everybody is under pressure to reduce cost and carbon footprint."
