EFSA clears food contact monomer
The food safety watchdog’s CEF Panel said it had no concerns about the material α-dimethyl-3-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)propylsilyloxy,ω-3-dimethyl-3-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)propylsilyl polydimethylsiloxane, n=26-50, CAS No. 156065-00-8.
The approval was granted under EC Regulation No.1935/2004, after a request from the UK Food Standards Agency.
The experts stipulated it could be used only as a comonomer in siloxane modified polycarbonate. Migration of the material must be limited to a maximum of 0.05 mg/kg food.
“The end-capper eugenol must comply with the restriction on migration set in Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011,” added the panel.

The US-based company said it was intended for use as a comonomer in polydimethylsiloxane polycarbonate copolymer at a maximum content of 22% w/w. However, the polycarbonate copolymer will be blended with polycarbonate to obtain a final content of 6.6% w/w at maximum in order to modify physical and mechanical properties of the plastic.
The end product will be targeted for either single or repeated use for all types of foodstuffs at room temperature or refrigerated conditions for a long period or at maximum 100ºC for a short period.
Food boxes and water bottles, as well as housewares and spatulas are given as typical potential applications.
