Elopak is expanding its 1 litre Pure-Pak Sense carton sizes with portion and family packs with further machines to be rolled out this year.

The company has already invested in a retrofit kit on one of its existing machines capable of running both the Pure-Pak Sense and Pure-Pak Classic carton on the same line and launches a 500ml size this month.

Revising its portfolio

Dr Christoph Schönig, director global marketing, Elopak, told internal newsletter, Elotalk, the Pure-Pak Sense carton is the first step in revising its total offering and portfolio.

The carton has been tested and launched in several Beta sites across Europe with a strong positive response from customers, retailers and consumers,” he said.

Through extensive testing we have made sure of the effectiveness and relevance of all the benefits of the new carton. To date, the formula of innovative features that brings the combination of new form and functionality is proving successful for our customers in fresh markets.”

The Pure-Pak Sense carton was developed at the Elopak Technology Centre in Spikkestad, Norway. It comes with a top fin print option, smooth front panel and easy-to-fold lines.

Customers include Skånemerier in Sweden (part of the Lactalis group) to package its yoghurt and fermented milk products in 1 litre Pure-Pak Sense cartons in September 2013 and TINE which launched four milk products in July last year across east Norway as a test market for Pure-Pak Sense.

Other customers include Arla Foods kwarkyoghurt, Melkunie bolletjesvla (custard with little chocolate balls) and Glanbia, which launched the Avonmore SuperMilk range across Ireland in October.

Our brief was to find a pack that would bring more user-friendly benefits with optimised opening and pouring,” said Pat Comerford, head of operations, Glandia.

We wanted to expand the lifespan of our packaging with a carton that answers consumer needs now but is also for the next generation of end-users.

As markets mature, runs become shorter and filling lines have to deliver the flexibility to make efficient changeovers to different packs and sizes. Elopak delivered this with the Shikoku S-PS 140 US filing machine.

Two filling machines were installed last year and the entire Avonmore brand switched to the new carton at the end of November including its Slimline Milk, Buttermilk, Lactose Free Milk and Heart Active products.

Glanbia will be repackaging some of its other dairy products in Pure-Pak Classic cartons in 2015.
