Supported by seven leading supermarkets, the campaign aims to achieve a 50 per cent cut in the number of plastic bags given out by the end of May this year. Since 2006 retailers, have reduced the amount of bags they give out by 26 per cent, according to the consortium.
UK shoppers use 13,000 carrier bags in their lifetimes, according to new research. Last year 9.9bn carrier bags were handed out - enough to fill 188 Olympic swimming pools.
Meanwhile, US retail chain Whole Foods Market claims its re-useable bag campaign has kept 150m plastic bags out of landfill sites during the past year.
The retailer is looking for alternatives to plastic bags in its bulk, produce, bakery and seafood departments and is working with vendors to eliminate Styrofoam packaging in shipments.
