A line of high-end ready meals for health-conscious consumers has launched in packaging that enables food to be prepared, shipped, sold, and heated in the same pouch.
Chefs Diet, a New York City-based producer of premium ready meals for health-conscious and calorie-counting customers, has turned to Cryovac’s Simple Steps packaging for its products. The containers stand out by making it possible to prepare, ship, sell, and heat food products in the same pouch.
Chefs Diet CEO Kevin Glodek told FoodProductionDaily the company enlisted the Cryovac packaging after determining the pouches could enable them to offer higher quality than competitors.
“To keep in line with our mission, evolve with the diet industry and bring the best quality meals to consumers, we started to look at new and innovative ways to package our food options,” he said. “That is how we have come to work with Sealed Air; Chefs Diet is first in the diet industry to incorporate this technology.”
Glodek explained the food is cooked fresh, then blast-chilled to preserve flavor and quality. Next, each meal plate is sealed using the company’s TraySkin tray-sealer system.
“This system allows us to apply the film from the top and vacuum all the air out evenly over the plate; the result is a plate that showcases every ingredient to our consumers,” he said. “By eliminating all of the oxygen evenly over the entire plate TraySkin technology all but eliminates freezer burn, moisture and ice crystals, to allow Chefs Diet to give our clients a premium presentation each and every time.”
The Simple Steps packaging has a self-venting feature, with a vacuum seal to eliminate air and keep in fresh flavor. Its steam-assisted cooking capability reportedly helps preserve flavor and cook evenly to maintain quality.
The Chefs Diet line includes a broad range of gourmet meals, including Beef Bourguignon in Red Wine and Atlantic Salmon with Spinach and Lentil Pilaf. Vegetarian options (including Wild Mushroom Ravioli with Sundried Tomato Cream Sauce) also are offered.
Chefs Diet kicked off by selling to consumers in the New York area. The company is working to expand its delivery circle to the 48 contiguous states and broaden its menu.
