Gas Analyser launched for accurate data readings

A new multifunctional gas analyser can provide food packaging companies with accurate data storage and assure traceability for their products, according to its manufacturer Witt Gas Techniques Limited.

Witt gas analysers for the food industry are used in Modified Atmospheres Packaging (MAP), which ensures perishable foods remain fresh and attractive. MAP replaces the normal atmosphere in the pack by a specified gas mix, the main components of which are oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

The modified atmosphere in the package helps prevent the growth of microbiological organisms and bio-chemical reactions and the consequent spoilage of goods. MAP is a reliable and cost effective alternative to refrigeration or preservatives.

The technology is increasingly popular with packaging companies who need to maintain the quality of fresh food such as sandwiches, fresh pizzas and meats.

Witt Gas Techniques claims that the new new MAPY 4.0 system can store thousands of measurements, product parameters and data using an SD, or secure digital memory card.

Information on the balance of gases in the packs is shown on the angled, coloured, touch screen. The percentage of gases present is shown on a bar graph. If the gas levels are within limits the bars are green, if limits have been exceeded the bar is red, explained Witt Gas.

This information can then be downloaded onto a computer or USB memory stick for further examination.

According to Witt Gas, the MAPY 4.0 system is ideal for intermediate sampling using a needle after the product has been packaged, however, with a different housing it can also be accommodated on the packaging lines and used for random sampling.

The system is mains operated, and can analyse both O2 and CO2 gases, the company said.

The MAPY 4.0 can also be supplied with an easy to replace Zirconia O2 sensor, which enables the analyser to work quicker and even more efficiently. Witt Gas can also provide the option of a barcode reader for easy identification of products and an integrated printer for instant readable data, the company said.

Witt Gas Techniques Limited is a medium sized family owned enterprise with partners and customers in over 60 countries. In addition to gas analysers the company provides specific devices and systems for the mixing and metering of gases for packing machines used in the food industry.

The company claims to be the world leading manufacturer of gas blending systems for MAP.
