Henkel has expanded its portfolio of adhesives and sealants aimed at flexible packaging.

The solvent-free laminating adhesives from the Liofol LA 7777 family are suitable for high barrier films that demand low CO2 formation from the adhesive and the low monomer content of this adhesive also makes the R40 label unnecessary.

Due to the reduced monomer content and the design of the adhesives, converters can reduce the risk of primary aromatic amine (PAA) formation and the time required for decay of primary aromatic amines, said the firm.

The adhesive systems have been given a convenient long potlife of up to 60 minutes which Henkel said is double the time of reference systems.

Henkel said a laminated structure containing an OPA film typically used for cheese packaging requires more time for full cure and decay of primary aromatic amines than an OPP/OPP structure for snack food packaging.

The Liofol LA 7777 series allows converters to shorten the time to compliance with food regulations.

Water-based heat seal lacquer

Henkel has also developed a water-based heat seal lacquer for food applications, through a special production technology, so it is possible to exclude unwanted residual solvents.

Liofol HS 2210-22 is a low temperature sealing lacquer which activates at less than 100°C and can be applied on film, foil and paper.

Liofol HS 2210-22 bridges the gap between several technologies and allows users who want to operate solvent-free lines to integrate heat seal technology into their converted products without the need for investment in hotmelt application technology.

Henkel PS 6025

PSA technologies

The water-based acrylic adhesive Aquence PS 6025 is a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) suited for sticking transparent films to transparent substrates, such as clear glass or plastic.

Aquence PS 6025 remains ultra-clear, even when exposed to moisture, such as the condensation water that can form on a beverage bottle.

Competitor products can have a tendency to become yellowish or milky in the presence of moisture, said the firm.

Films coated with Aquence PS 6025 can be easy to cut, making it possible to speed up the production of products such as self-adhesive labels.

Henkel presented the range of adhesives and coatings at the International Converting Exhibition in Munich, Germany last week.
