ITC has developed a shelf-ready packaging (SRP) for consumer goods where the pack turns into a retail shelf.

The firm, which makes packaging for products including Sunfeast Dark Fantasy biscuits, believes it can transform FMCG packaging the way Tetra Pak did for beverages and dairy industries.

Growth opportunities India

Renga Senguttuvan, CEO, packaging and printing, ITC India, said the company plans to set up a packaging plant in western India to tap into potential growth opportunities, but it has yet to decide on a location.

"Developed markets extensively use shelf-ready packaging for modern trade. We believe this is a trend that will catch on in India, especially at a time when retailers are trying to reduce capital cost and we are getting ready for the same," he said.

Ferrero Rocher and Nestlé

The company plans to pitch its SRP to Tata Global Beverages, Ferrero Rocher and Nestlé, to name a few, as well as clients in Africa and the Middle East.

SRP refers to the preparation of a product so it is delivered to a retailer in a ready-to-sell merchandised unit. Items can be placed on the shelf without the need for unpacking or repacking.

The company currently has three plants; in Chennai, Haridwar and Munger, which have integrated packaging and design units.

Its FMCG portfolio has more than 50 brands including Aashirvaad, Sunfeast, Dark Fantasy, Delishus, Bingo!, Yippee!, Candyman and Mint-o.
