FoodProductionDaily.com caught up with regulatory experts Intertek in Düsseldorf last month to discuss the challenges for food and drink manufacturers around the Plastics Implementing Measure (PIM), which came into force last month.

PIM replaces the current plastics Directive 2002/72/EC, among others, and Chantal Haarmaan, business development manager at Intertek, highlighted the most significant changes ushered in under the new regulation when we spoke at Interpack 2011.

According to Haarmaan, the major amendments include new measures for plastic layers in multi-materials as well as the changes in the simulants used and conditions required for migration testing.

She reports that Intertek regulatory experts can assist brand owners in ensuring compliance with PIM, particularly in relation to migration testing and completing the Document of Compliance (DOC) to demonstrate adherence with the new Directive.
