Joris Nachtergaele has been appointed as director external affairs at Metal Packaging Europe to support members’ interests in Brussels.

The role will involve engaging with policymakers and environmental NGO’s to educate them in the targets set out in Metal Packaging Europe’s manifesto, including the 80% recycling rate target and zero metal packaging to landfill.

Metal Packaging Europe is a trade body representing the interests of producers and suppliers of rigid metal packaging across Europe.

He joined the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL) as EU public affairs manager in 2007 and progressed to deputy managing director, where he combined public affairs with management of the association.

Nachtergaele said: “We have a unique platform which allows us to establish key contacts within the European institutions, exploring new thinking on how to deal with materials, packaging and waste across Europe leading to a constructive cooperation to explore mutual interests and goals.”
