LamiCan beats off stiff competition to win Packology Award

Start-up company, Lamican, which was founded in 2007, has beaten its competitors to win the most Innovative Food Packaging from 2010 to 2013 at Packology 2013, at Rimini Expo Center, in Italy.

The product is an environmentally friendly paperboard based can, a recyclable package made mostly from renewable paperboard. The company provides a complete system that includes the packaging machine and the packaging material.

Henry Alzamora, international marketing manager, Lamican, said the award is proof that the product has tangible benefits and has already sparked interest with enquiries from prospective clients.

He said its mission is to provide a different alternative on aseptic liquid packaging that enable beverage businesses to excel. Competitors include Tetra Pak, SIG Combibloc and EloPak.

As a small company, we are still in the development phase of our business which means we have a lot of things in the pipeline​,” said Alzamora.

Gaining exposure

Our technology is different to what is already on the market and it offers a valuable alternative to the beverage industry. The fact we were awarded this prize without any marketing or publicity used by other well-known brands is testament to the judges final decision​.”

He added the challenge for the company right now was gaining more exposure about its patented aseptic filling technology. The product has a 12-month shelf life, no need for refrigeration or preservatives and is suitable for juices, still drinks and dairies.

We are now helping beverage brand owners to develop and test market new or existing brands in LamiCans and our company, Lamican has established a co-packing facility with Finnish co-packer Bullberry​.”

Global vision

Some of the liquids that LamiCan 250ml can be filled with include: milks made of oat, soy and rice, sport and energy drinks, coffee drinks, smoothies and tomato soups.

The event was sponsored by UCIMA and Rimini Fiera and organised in collaboration and with the support of ADI (the Industrial Design Association).
