Borealis hopes its new transparent polypropylene (PP) film will hit all the right notes, citing its improved clarity, and "cost-effective, environmentally-friendly processing" characteristics.

The Austria-based company today said its new grade of Borclear is intended for the production of high transparent PP blown films used in food packaging.

"Borclear RB709CF now provides the food industry with packaging that has improved optics and sealing behaviour, and film converters and extruders with a product that provides cost-effective, environmentally-friendly processing," the company said.

The combination of properties allows plastic film packaging producers to reduce the amount of film required, thanks to the material's high stiffness.

"The reduced material usage results in cost and environmental benefits throughout the food packaging value chain," the company stated.

It has a heat resistance of up to 100C and low hexane levels, thus meeting US standards, the company claimed.

The company describes RB709CF as a random copolymer PP characterised by "brilliant clarity, outstanding sealing performance, high stiffness and good printability".

The company suggests it can be used in for bread film, lamination film for dried pasta packaging and high gloss label films.

A more efficient processing is achieved through the film's low sealing initiation temperature and broad sealing window, the company claimed.

These characteristics reduce sealing cycle times, creating more seals per minute and increased line speed, the company claimed.

"Furthermore, film winding and the converting of the film is made easier," the company stated.
