Packaging pushes PET market to 76.7m tons
Worldwide demand for PET is anticipated to continue its upward climb over the next few years, hitting 76.7m tons by 2016. Food and beverage packaging comprises approximately 63% of the total demand.
Consistent growth
Growth in PET-based packaging and other products is growing at about 11% in most regions. Europe is seeing the highest growth (11.7%), while the Asia-Pacific region (11.3%) and the Americas (10.9%) are close behind.
Anticipating increased interest in PET packaging among food and beverage firms, packaging providers are increasing their offerings made of the material.
Oxygen-blocking properties
Indiana-based manufacturer Mullinix has launched food containers made of its OxyRx PET material, which reportedly eliminates the risk of oxygen permeation for more than four years.
According to Mullinix, the material appeals because of its ability to protect edibles and crystal-clear appearance. The PET resin can be thermoformed into a range of shapes, and it can be lidded with films or foils.
Food protection
PET containers reportedly protect the flavor, appearance and aroma of foods better than other materials. Additionally, they can be recycled in most municipal waste streams.
Mullinix reports that its OxyRx material can be converted into CPET packaging for use in retort applications. Also, the containers can be heated in conventional or microwave ovens at up to 400 deg F.
