Best Packaging Systems has released the DS20 semi-automatic stretch taper, a machine that secures product pallets with minimal material.

Barb McKeage of Best Packaging Systems told FoodProductionDaily.com the new machine fits snugly with the company’s overreaching goal to boost sustainability.

Packaging has long been targeted as a waste-generating medium,” McKeage said. “Here at Best Packaging Systems, we realized the need to address consumer concern and provide global conscious customers with an eco-friendly solution."

Sustainability goals

The Best Packaging Systems team reportedly worked to create a system that could offer food manufacturing customers better productivity and higher sustainability than past systems. The end result: the firm reports that the taper slashes waste by as much as 95% compared to shrink-wrapping systems.

In addition to reducing material use, the tape reportedly secures products (especially those that need to be held in place but cannot be crushed) more effectively.

Visual appeal

Visibility also comes into play. The thin strips of tape are less likely to block graphics, or cause labels and printing to become damaged. This aids visual identification of pallets, and aesthetics.

McKeage said one of the machine’s advantages is it requires no specialized training to get going.

It is a plug and play,” she said. “It has an Allen-Bradley touchscreen control, there are nine wrap patterns, and it is easily operated.”

The DS20 already has received some positive attention. The Packaging Association of Canada recently awarded Best Packaging Systems its PAC Leadership Award for Sustainable Packaging.
