Tetra Pak has reported further progress towards its 2020 environmental goals, following “a good start” in 2012.

In 2011, Tetra Pak set itself a series of targets with the ultimate aim of providing fully sustainable packaging, using only renewable materials, and leaving a minimal environmental footprint and zero waste.

According to the company, carbon emissions decreased by two kilo tonnes in 2012. It also increased recycling of Tetra Pak beverage cartons to 581 kilo tonnes in 2012. Its efforts in 2012 take it up to around the 25% mark of its overall target.

Tetra Pak also set itself the task of increasing its supply of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper board for use in Tetra Pak packages to 100% by 2020, with an interim target to achieve 50% in 2012.

Tetra Pak increased its supply by 40% - slightly short of its 2012 target.

“We’re off to a good start, but there is still a lot to be done to achieve the 2020 targets that we set ourselves in 2011,” said Tetra Pak president and CEO, Dennis Jönsson.

“Strong environmental performance goes hand in hand with long-term business success, and we are working closely with our suppliers, customers and other external parties to ensure that we deliver on our environmental commitments, helping all of us to achieve our sustainable growth ambitions.”
