How2Recycle, a program that wants standardized recycling labels on most US consumer goods by 2016, has welcomed supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets to its scheme.

It is the first grocer to sign up to the labeling program, which tackles confusing recycling instructions on products.

Wegmans is participating in the ‘store drop-off’ scheme. Customers can return plastic bags, films and wraps to dedicated bins in store. The labeling on the packaging shows which items can be recycled.

We joined How2Recycle because we often hear from customers who are confused about existing recycling messages, and we see this as a step in the right direction towards clarity,” said Jason Wadsworth, sustainability co-ordinator, Wegmans.

We have collected plastic bags and film since the early 1990s, so this is not new for customers.

But if we can make recycling easier to understand then my hope is that the rate will increase. I imagine our customers will be glad to see we are helping to make it easier,” he added.

The scheme is in effect across all Wegmans stores.

The How2 Recycle scheme was launched in 2008 and has more than 20 participating companies and brands.  Variation in recycling programs and unclear labeling can make recycling a challenge, the program says, so its voluntary scheme puts clear, standardized instructions on labels.
