Wipak Group invests €20m in high barrier film production line for perishable food

The Wipak Group has announced it is investing €20m on a high barrier film production line for perishable food at its plant in Nastola, Finland.

The investment is part of the company’s development program to improve performance and increase its service levels.

Dairy, fish, fruits & vegetables

Matti Rovamaa, vice president/general manager, Wipak Group, told FoodProductionDaily the production line will produce packaging material combining visual, protective and environmental benefits.

The technology is currently being installed and will initially produce high-end barrier films for perishable food such as dairy products, fish, fruits and vegetables​,” he said.
This is one step in Wipak group’s continued program to both support growth and improve service levels and operational performance​.”

Wipak was founded in 1950 and merged with Finnish family-owned Wihuri Group in 1967.

Barrier films & semi-rigid sheets

The Nastola plant employs around 380 people and focuses on films for the food industry, the medical sector and paper finishing. In the food sector, it specializes in multilayer medium and high barrier films.

Wipak Oy has a range of environment-friendly products from barrier films to semi-rigid sheets.

The technology will facilitate a more environmentally friendly process, reducing food waste by delivering high performance packaging whilst improving raw material yield​,” added Rovamaa.

Wipak's strength lies in its expertise in R&D with a network of production facilities and services including PackDesign, Solution Centers and Application Support.

Together with its North American sister company, Winpak Group is part of Wihuri Packaging Oy and has 21 production facilities on three continents and a network of global sales offices.
