Food engineering degree could revolutionise industry

1 comment23-Apr-2012

A new university degree in food and drink manufacturing will revolutionise the delivery of engineering into the industry, said the UK trade body behind the initiative.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) said it hoped to launch the degree in September 2014 as it sought university partners from across the country to develop the course.

The association said more than 20 UK universities last week attended a briefing at the government’s Department of Business Innovation to discuss the course and ways to develop a future centre of excellence.

“The new degree course will form a fundamental part of the UK food and drink industry’s ‘Graduate Ambition’ to help equip graduates with the technical skills and knowledge that the food and drink manufacturing industry requires,” said the FDF.

Universities have until midday on 8 May to submit expressions of interest online.

FDF human resources director, Angela Coleshill said: “This new degree course will be vital in ensuring we attract the top class young talent qualified to meet the specific needs of our sector.”

Food Engineering

Food Engineering B.Sc. programs in our universities have been established in Turkey since 1975. Today the number of FdE programs reached to a total of 54 with graduates of more than 30,000. Since then Food Engineers have successfully practiced their profession by applying fundamentals of engineering for designing of products, processes and systems with a special focus on the effects of their practices on health, environment, and social aspects. I would like to highlight that our food engineering B.Sc. programs represent a best practice example contributing to the developments in Turkish food industry.
