The Indian food processing industry will play a key role in helping the nation double its agricultural exports to $18bn within five years, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority.

Although the globe’s third largest producer of food, India is only the twentieth biggest exporter. Improving that situation will depend partly on boosting the nation’s food processing industry and improving facilities to transport and store perishable foods, according to the authority.

Its chairman Asit Tripathy said: “The products that we will be in focus are grapes, pomegranates, dehydrated onions, mango pulp, honey, poultry and egg powder.”
