Petro-Canada said its Purity FG line of industrial strength food grade lubricant now contains Microl, an antimicrobial preservative.
Stringent regulations, harsh environmental conditions and rigorous plant operations require a well-designed food grade lubricant, said Henry Sapiano, a Petro-Canada manager.
"Protecting food grade lubricants from deterioration, fouling, and odor caused by microorganisms is a new frontier in the optimisation of equipment performance," he said.
The new line is available as a grease, hydraulic or gear fluid, said Nicolas Joujou, a manager with Petro-Canada's lubricant division.
"Purity FG with Microl is a significant development in the food processing industry," he said. "This new product line inhibits microbial growth in the lubricant to prevent degradation in plant-tough environments."
The additive is the first and only antimicrobial preservative currently registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in food grade lubricants, the Canadian company claimed.
The company has also registered Purity FG with Microl with NSF International, an international standards setting agency.
Further registrations are pending in Europe, Australia and Latin America.
Petro-Canada claims to be the world's largest producer of pharmaceutical grade white oil used in a variety of food processing industries.
