Investing in automation technology in the food manufacturing industry could enhance productivity by around 10 percent, according to Beckhoff Automation, which recently presented its technology to industry.

The firm’s Michael Jost told FoodProductionDaily.com that solutions such as its EtherCAT and XFC technology could help cut costs for manufacturers by either making machines faster or by removing the need for specialized systems.

“By using modern PCs you can increase productivity and efficiency of machines on average by 10 per cent because the control system makes the whole machine faster and you can get out more product. You could also get rid of specialized systems, that would make the machine control system cheaper,” said Jost.

These kind of systems – known as fast communication systems – are becoming increasingly popular in the current tight economic climate, as manufacturers are forced to think about new solutions to improve efficiency, he said.
