Solvay's Amodel PPA and KetaSpire PEEK gets NSF approval
Solvay Specialty Polymers has received National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approval for seven Amodel polyphthalamide (PPA) and KetaSpire polyetheretherketone (PEEK) resin grades under its NSF/ANSI 51 standard for food equipment materials.

The certification expands Solvay’s portfolio manufacturing commercial food service equipment for aviation, rail transport, hotel and catering and applications include beverage dispensers, water tanks, stock pots, pistons and valves.

NSF standard is an essential criterion for materials suppliers

Andreas Lutz, global market manager, consumer goods, Solvay Specialty Polymers, told FoodProductionDaily,  there is a market trend that appliances that touch food have to be NSF 51 listed.

A NSF 51 listing significantly helps customers to speed up their approval process for the whole appliance and lowers the risk of failing the NSF listing for the appliance under development,” he said.

NSF standard is an essential criterion for materials suppliers. We are currently working on the NSF Listing of our IXEF FC family.”

Three glass-filled Amodel PPA grades, offered as black and naturally colored options, are part of the six newly certified grades.

They include Amodel FC-1140 (40% glass fiber), Amodel FC-1150 (50% glass fiber) and Amodel FC-1160 (60% glass fiber).

The seventh NSF-certified product is KetaSpire KT-880 NT PEEK, an unreinforced resin characterized by wear and abrasion resistance combined with high surface hardness, fatigue performance, and chemical resistance.

All of the materials are certified under NSF/ANSI 51 for applications reaching 100°C (212°F), but retain their mechanical properties at continuous-use temperatures up to 120°C (248°F).

Resistance to oils, greases, hot water,

They have a strong resistance to oils, greases, hot water, steam and common household cleaners and descalers.

According to Lutz, the Solvay grades all meet corresponding food service regulations under the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and EU Commission.

Compared to competing thermoplastics, such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyoxymethylene (POM) and aliphatic polyamides (PA6 and PA66), Solvay’s polymers have a higher level of performance over a wide temperature range in harsh food service environments,” he added.

It also has thermal and dimensional stability, low moisture absorption and heat/steam resistance.”

Solvay’s portfolio of NSF-approved polymers have seen an increase in demand for commercial consumer goods applications.
