A new machine to sort and inspect shelled nuts uses colour cameras and laser technology to get the job done.

Key Technology's OptyxR G6 3000 sorter can detect defects in the nuts and remove them and contaminants from the processing line, improving speed, safety and efficiency the company stated.

As an automated process, the OptyxR eliminates costly hand-sorting labour.

"Based on recent production tests on almonds, we've seen foreign material removal efficiencies approaching 100 percent," stated Bret Larreau, the company's marketing manager.

The OptyxR uses a spatial resolution laser scanner to detect material to be removed. It allows processors and packers to more accurately match product specifications by removing shell, husk, andhull as well as nuts with insect damage and other defects.

A camera analyzes the size and shape as well as subtle colour differences in the nuts to removed damaged ones.

The machine features a 24-inch wide scan width and up to three sensors located above or below the product stream. The self-contained unit slips directly into the processing line. It has a flat beltwith air-tensioning for consistent tracking and minimal maintenance.

A quick-release feature and cantilever design speeds up the process of replacing the belt.

The machine is built for processing and packaging lines handling 8,000 to 12,000 pounds of tree nuts per hour.

An icon-based graphical user interface allows operators to see what the laser is analysing. The patented feature delivers more machine feedback to the operator, which allows for more accurateadjustment of rejection thresholds.

Product settings can be stored and retrieved for fast product changeover. The interface can reside locally on the sorter and can be accessed remotely via network or the Internet.

"Sophisticated real-time and on-demand diagnostics help minimise and avoid costly downtime and detect conditions that could compromise inspection," the company stated.
