Rusal steps up Vietnamese focus

By Neil Merrett, 22-May-2007

Metals group Rusal is to extend its global presence further with the opening of a new representative office in Vietnam.

The group expects the move will allow it to connect directly with beverage manufacturers, providing a more immediate supply service.

The opening of the office is part of Rusal's plan to push for full self sufficiency within its operations, as it moves to oversee all levels of production, from raw material supply through to formulation and distribution of its products.

At the beginning of the year the group was granted clearance by creditors to move ahead with a merger, combining its own processing capabilities with leading refiner Sual and commodities supplier Glencore.

The company's presence has extended to over 70 countries as it moves to dominate all aspects of the global aluminium market.

Vietnam's beverage sector, particularly for aluminium products

, is growing rapidly as higher consumer purchasing power drives growth of the packaged foods market.

About 200 new beverages were launched in the Vietnamese market in the first 10 months of 2005, nearly double that of 2004, according to a survey conducted by TNS Vietnam.

The survey also revealed that consumers are increasingly looking for quality and convenient products.
