Ireland expands lab space at functional food research centre

Ireland's Moorepark Food Research Centre is shoring up its capacity for functional food development with the addition of new laboratories and around 40 researchers, it said on Friday.

The centre works on innovative technologies for the dairy, food ingredients, and beverage sectors in Ireland.

Functional foods have been slated for strong growth in the country. Although such products currently generate sales of approximately €100 million, they could generate more than €250 million in the next five years under a National Functional Foods Forum launched by a government-funded body at the end of last year.

Dr Paul Ross, head of biotechnology at Moorepark, said the most advanced biotechnological techniques will be employed, identical to those used in major international research initiatives such as the human genome project, with the primary aim of harnessing new sciences to create opportunities for Irish food companies.

Research at the labs will also be carried out on food quality and safety, and on molecular genetic tools for animal breeding.
