Harvard scientists that have developed a coating to prevent biofilms forming in food processing machinery have received a grant to further develop the technology.
The team, led by Joanna Aizenberg, at the Wyss Institute received the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) innovation grant to develop the slippery coating.
The grant supports the development of self-repairing coatings for the insides of oil and water pipelines to reduce friction and energy use.
SLIPS (Slippery-Liquid-Infused-Porous-Surfaces) creates a hybrid surface that is smooth and slippery due to its liquid layer.
Biofilms are hard to remove pathogens that get stuck on machinery and other surfaces in manufacturing plants.
