FDA to hold public meeting on key FSMA proposed rules

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced it will hold a public meeting Nov. 13 to discuss potential changes to four proposed rules associated with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Originally proposed in 2013, those rules are:

  • Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food (Preventive Controls of Human Food);
  • Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (Produce Safety);
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals (Preventive Controls for Animal Food); and
  • Foreign Supplier Verification Programs for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals (Foreign Supplier Verification Programs).

FDA officials said the purpose of the meeting is to solicit oral stakeholder and public comments on the new content of the supplemental proposed rules, to respond to questions about the rules, and to inform the public about the rulemaking process. That process has been extended significantly in the case of these four supplemental rules, as FDA received a deluge of comments and complaints from all segments of the food industry after it issued the proposed rules last year.

The meeting will be held Nov. 13, 2014, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm at the Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD 20740, and will also be available via live webcast. The agency urges prospective attendees to register on-line​ promptly, as seating is limited.
