The company is joining with Clarion Water to broaden the reach of its Isan disinfection technology system, which has won recognition from DuPont.

The Isan equipment uses iodine to disinfect water systems in food production, processing, and packaging environments. The technology landed a DuPont Innovation Award in 2004, and a Top 50 Water Company award from the Artemis project.

Expanding food safety

Dennis Calvert, president of BioLargo, said joining with Clarion Water will enable a broader number of food safety managers to take advantage of the technology.

The global applications for the Isan system are vast as industries all over the world seek a sustainable and cost-effective solution to disinfect water and control disease," he said.

Isan uses iodine because of its properties as a broad-spectrum biocide and effectiveness in fighting biological contamination. It automated dosing reportedly can increase the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and other fresh products and ingredients.

Meeting regulatory requirements

Calvert said the Isan system has been demonstrated to be effective against a wide range of bacterial and fungal contaminants, and can assist producers in meeting safety regulations, such as HACCP.

"The Isan system has been validated through early stage commercialization and comprehensive testing conducted in Australia and New Zealand,” he said. “Clarion intends to leverage this early work and focus initial commercialization efforts on the vast opportunities for the technology in improving plant quality and shelf life as well as explore additional opportunities for use in select industrial applications.”

Under the agreement, Clarion Water will hold exclusive global manufacturing and distribution rights to the Isan system.
