Processors must maintain hygiene levels as new superbug found

18-Nov-2008

Food processors in the UK have been urged to maintain normal hygiene practices to prevent contamination of foods with new antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

According to minutes from Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) meeting, the bacterium E. coli O26, reportedly resistant to cephalosporin and penicillin-type antibiotics, was discovered for the first time on a British dairy farm.

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), other bacterial species such as Salmonella and Campylobacter are becoming increasingly resistant to current antibiotic treatments.
