UPM Raflatac has been awarded ISO 22000:2005 food safety certification for factories in Finland (Tampere), the UK (Scarborough) and Poland (Wroclaw and Nowa Wies).

Certification includes the manufacture and slitting of self-adhesive label stock for food contact and food packaging used by the printing and converting industry.

It was awarded by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) and is valid for three years.

European food packaging legislation states that food contact materials in the food chain can only be provided by companies who comply with EU Good Manufacturing Practice Regulation (EC/2023/2006).

Food packaging materials must contain safe and compliant selected raw materials to ensure manufacturing does not cause chemical, physical or biological contamination to the food product.

“UPM Raflatac supplies self-adhesive label stock for food packaging, among other industries, and this certification demonstrates to our customers that the processes related to food safety at our factories are in good order and meet GMP requirements,” said Vesa Laaksonen, quality development director.

Meanwhile, Coveris has partnered with UPM Raflatac’s Rafcycle recycling concept.

Sian Bates, marketing manager with Coveris in the UK, said: “We segregate, sort and redistribute our waste, along with the backing paper collections from our customers in order to redirect, and in a lot of cases recycle, over 2,500 tonnes of process waste from landfill every year.

“We are very much within the early stages of supporting the ProFi process but by working in partnership with UPM Raflatac, we are looking to expand this supply significantly using their environmental transport structure to put even more of our waste and by-products to regenerative use.”
