Alcoa, a supplier of aluminium sheet and foil for food and beverage packaging, has announced that it achieved at 36 per cent cut its total direct greenhouse gas emissions from its aluminium production process last year.

The company stated that the reduction is an improvement of three per cent over the company’s 2007 emission levels.

According to Alcoa’s schedule for reducing its environmental impact its initial goal was to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in worldwide direct greenhouse gases by 2010 from a base year of 1990, but the company claims it has reached that goal seven years ahead of the timeframe.

“It is the result of commitment to process improvement, to waste elimination, to use of best technology and tools available, and commitment to the environment,” claims the CEO of Alcoa, Alain Belda.
