Closures at confectionery plant

In the news again this week Swiss cocoa processor Barry Callebaut announced closures at its German confectionery unit Stollwerck in a bid to streamline operations.

Barry Callebaut, which bought Germany's Stollwerck last year, plans to shut the two German plants - in Muenstertal and Muellheim - at the end of September and lay off around 270 people involved in the production of its Gubor brand products.

According to the company the two plants, built in the 1950's, required 'significant investment requirements' that Barry Callebaut could not justifiy ' in view of Gubor's low production volumes and the fact that modern production capacities are available elsewhere within the Stollwerck group,' said the cocoa group this week.
