Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Donaldson said: "There have been deaths in Mexico and the Mexican health system is probably not as well supplied as we are with drugs like anti-virals. So at this stage I think it would be premature to conclude that this is a mild infection.”
A second, larger wave of infections could arrive during the normal flu season in the autumn and winter, said Donaldson. Officials are monitoring the progress of swine flu virus in southern hemisphere countries like Australia and New Zealand during their autumn winter months.
