RockTenn defends “extreme” closure measures

RockTenn is to close a corrugated converting plant by the end of the month in Quebec, Canada, due to the sharp drop in demand for the products in the marketplace.

The firm said although the measures are “extreme” they come in response to real market conditions and the drop in demand for corrugated products on domestic and global markets.

The St. Laurent facility closure, on 30 January 2013, is in response to operating costs, long-term strategic planning and the ability to deliver products and services to clients, said the firm in a letter to employees and customers in December.

The closure comes months after the shuttering of another mill in Quebec which produced containerboard.
