US funding aims for greener future

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has announced $10m funding to five projects that will develop technologies to convert biomass into advanced biofuels and bioproducts.

The projects in California, Washington, Maryland, and Texas will use synthetic biological and chemical techniques to convert biomass into processable sugars that can be transformed into bioproducts such as plastics and chemical intermediates.

Two of the projects will develop ways to produce intermediates from the deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass, while three projects will propose conversion techniques to transform biomass intermediates into advanced biofuels and bioproducts.

Novozymes, J. Craig Venter Institute, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Texas AgriLife Research and Lygos were selected to lead the projects.
