RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags represent the fastest growing F&B anti-counterfeit products at 20.4% CAGR from 2015-2020, according to Allied Market Research (AMR), an Oregon, US based market Intelligence company.

It predicts the anti-counterfeiting food packaging market is expected to reach $62.5bn, globally, by 2020 with holograms moving to the top spot in the authentication technology market.

Number one: Zebra Technologies

Its report, ‘Global Anti-counterfeit Food & Beverage Packaging Market- Industry Analysis, Size, Growth, Trends, Opportunities, and Forecast, 2014-2020’, forecasts the market to grow at a CAGR of 16.1% during 2015 - 2020.

Vikram Singh Mehta, digital marketing executive, AMR, told FoodProductionDaily the top 10 companies providing anti-counterfeit products for the food and beverage industry are;

  1. Zebra Technologies
  2. Inksure Technologies
  3. Alien Technology Corp.
  4. Alpvision
  5. Avery Dennison
  6. Sicpa
  7. Authentix Inc
  8. Flint Group
  9. Applieddnascience
  10. TruTag Technologies, Inc.

Presently, anti-counterfeit technologies are widely adopted in developed regions such as the US and Germany,” he said.

The reason for this wider spread adoption is the presence of high purchasing power and brand preference of the consumers. However, due to the increase in initiatives from the government authorities across developed regions, the counterfeiting activities are decreased to a certain extent.

Counterfeiters targeting developing regions

Counterfeiters are now targeting developing regions owing to lower awareness towards anti-counterfeit technologies and unaffordability of the end users for the costly product security solution.

However, introduction of novel barcode technologies and other conventional authentication technologies would bring revolutionary changes in the Asia-Pacific region. Countries like, India, China, Middle East and Africa would emerge as lucrative destinations for the anti-counterfeit technologies in the future.”

According to Mehta, every year millions of people are deceived into buying counterfeited food and beverages, posing significant health and safety risks, leading the demand of anti-counterfeit packaging (ACP).

Conventional authentication technologies still account for the highest revenue in the global ACP market owing to their economic pricing and ease of application.

The growing adoption of track and trace technologies, such as RFID and barcode, in premium product segments including wines and spirits, would gain significance over the forecast period,” he added.

Barcode enabled product tracking helps in maintaining the supply chain integrity. Emerging tracking technologies, such as DNATrax, exhibit the highest potential in tracking food products with minimal side effects on human health.”

Lack of affordability of high end technologies

However, he warned a lack of awareness for authentication technology among local manufacturers and the lack of affordability of high end technologies (such as RFID) would limit the market growth.

But, awareness campaigns organized by anti-counterfeit trade associations, and regular interventions from government authorities would increase use of anti-counterfeit technologies.

In the report, Mehta said North America accounted for about 50% of the global anti-counterfeit food packaging market in 2014.

Increasing counterfeiting practices from European and Asian regions, higher adoption rates of anti-counterfeit technologies, rise in healthcare concerns along with the growing awareness for tracing technologies are largely contributing to growth of the market.

The increasing focus from government authorities towards food crisis management, across middle income population and the rising awareness for authenticated food products are factors that drive the market growth across developing regions.

Sicapa and Zebra Technologies are leading players in the global market. Other key manufacturing companies profiled in the report are, Alien Technology Corp., Alpvision, Inksure Technologies, Avery Dennison, Flint Group, and Authentix Inc.
