China in bid to reduce food safety risk

Food safety monitoring in China has been stepped up significantly since the authorities launched a nationwide drive in December against illegal additives, reports China Daily.

According to the article, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said it had taken a range of steps in this regard including examining food producers and products as well as upgrading food-processing facilities to reduce risks.

The campaign was primarily in response to the melamine scandal last year, which left six infants dead and almost 300,000 ill.

GAQSIQ said that it had monitored more than 83 food projects involving 31 food categories so far this year and also cancelled 3,572 production permits held by 3,347 companies.
