The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) said it hoped to launch the degree in September 2014 as it sought university partners from across the country to develop the course.
The association said more than 20 UK universities last week attended a briefing at the government’s Department of Business Innovation to discuss the course and ways to develop a future centre of excellence.
“The new degree course will form a fundamental part of the UK food and drink industry’s ‘Graduate Ambition’ to help equip graduates with the technical skills and knowledge that the food and drink manufacturing industry requires,” said the FDF.
Universities have until midday on 8 May to submit expressions of interest online.
FDF human resources director, Angela Coleshill said: “This new degree course will be vital in ensuring we attract the top class young talent qualified to meet the specific needs of our sector.”
