SIG Combibloc is offering a carton targeted at chunkier food in its heat-resistant combisafe carton pack which can be sterilised in an autoclave.

Combisafe is used in products such as organic beans and pulses, passata and chopped tomatoes throughout Europe in 200ml, 300ml, 400ml and 500ml pack sizes.

SIG Combibloc said that because of the heat-resistant Combisafe carton pack, the range of products that can be filled and packaged forlong life in carton packs has expanded.

The firm claims it is the only retortable carton packaging which has the option of fully rotational sterilisation during the autoclave process, which delivers optimum temperature distribution inside the carton pack.

Combisafe filling

Through the use of three modular filling units, including a multi-head weigher, a range of products can be filled in combisafe – the size and quantity of the chunky product ingredients can vary and be measured out precisely.

In the first stage, products that can be pumped are filled, the second deals with dry pieces and in the third stage, the package is topped up with an infusion.

This process means individual product ingredients can be added to the recipe continuously and in the right quantities, using the 3-stage filling technology.

After the products have been filled into the carton pack, the carton top is sealed ultrasonically.

Autoclave action

They are then automatically conveyed into an autoclave, which can be either static or rotary – depending on the product requirements and customer preferences.

Through the continuous movement of the carton packs while they are undergoing the effects of heating, they also make it possible to fill and process certain products– particularly highly viscous foods containing extra-large particulates, such as baked beans.

The perforated opening means the top of the carton can be torn off by consumers allowing easy pouring to remove all the contents and minimise food waste, said the firm.

Imelda Harrington, key account manager at SIG Combibloc, said: "Combisafe makes it possible to fill chunkier food products such as beans and pulses into carton packs, offering a safe and secure alternative to glass, cans or pouches.”
