The Andalusian Plastics Technology Center (Andaltec) in Martos (Jaén), southern Spain, is working on a dozen projects related to packaging in the food industry.

The projects include development of products by thermal, mechanical and process simulations; prototyping and small scale test bath production, nano and bio-composites, active and intelligent packaging and applications for biodegradable plastics.

Andaltec was created in 2005 and has promoted seven start-up companies and assists more than 130. It has developed more than 80 R&D projects, and answers more than 100enquiries a month.

Advantages of plastic

Daniel Aguilera, director R&D, Andaltec said there are more firms operating in the food sector that prefer to wrap their products in plastic.

"Plastic is a material that has many advantages for the food sector and we are working closely with several Andalusian companies so their packaging is much more than a container for their product," he said.

Andaltec technicians have been working to extend the life of products without using additives that could contaminate them by improving the plastics used to contain food.

Cost of production

The benefits of the packaging that the Plastics Technology Center is developing are numerous. They provide a greater security to the consumer because the food stays fresh longer and in better condition.

Food companies are able to reduce the cost of production of their packaging and lengthen the time that their products can be on the market.”

Andaltec is a National Technological Centre approved by Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. It is registered with the Andalucian System for knowledge Agency, and is associated to the Andalucian Technological Space Network (RETA).
