Alcoa's Closure Systems International (CSI) division have launched the latest edition to their closure platform that will reduce packing weight and costs, the company claims.

The Xtra-lok mini has been specifically designed for carbonated soft drinks (CSD) and aims to deliver many of the features and performance of standard size closures but at a significant size and weight reduction.

The 28mm two-piece design, when applied to the Alcoa-designed short height bottle finish, reduces PET bottle finish weight by 27 percent.

CSI's quick-change capper conversion kit, mini, can easily integrate into existing bottling lines, potentially improving line uptime when switching between short height and standard size closures, claims the company.

"That means we supply not only a new closure, but the capping equipment, the technical support, and the strength and expertise of a global company in delivering this total packaging solution," said John Grainda, Alcoa CSI's marketing manager for CSD and bottled water products.

CSI's "sure grip" knurl on the outside makes for easy opening and closure, while the incorporation of the company's XT liner ensures product freshness from inside.

"The design allows a bottler the opportunity to reduce system packaging cost and maximize product freshness in an easy opening, short height profile," said Grainda.
