JS Humidifiers has helped a refrigerated equipment firm prevent up to 8.5 tonnes of product evaporating each day between cooking and canning at a fish producer.

JS Humidifiers claims its JetSpray humidifier is enabling ICS Cool Energy increase profits at a canned fish firm by $1m per year by maintaining a high humidity around the fish after steaming, leading to evaporative weight loss from the cooked fish being reduced from 5% to 0.67%.

After steaming, the fish needs to be rapidly cooled to be processed and canned but can lose up to 20% of its moisture in the process which had a significant impact as the firm processes up to 200 tonnes of fish every day.

The JetSpray humidifier combines compressed air and water in nozzles to produce a very fine spray that’s absorbed by the air.

The existing cool room sprinkler system at the fish factory was proving inefficient in terms of energy and water usage, said ICS Cool Energy.

Malcolm Edwards, group technical manager for ICS Cool Energy, said:“ICS installed a chilled water system to provide cooling but we needed advice on the most appropriate humidifier and contacted JS Humidifiers regarding its JetSpray.

“The JetSpray has been in operation now for a number of months keeping the humidity well over the required 90%RH and maintaining a very low 0.67% weight loss.”
