In signing a joint agreement with a US company, Tetra Pak hopes to offer an increased range of customised sterilisation systems for the food and beverage industry.

The deal could result in more choice for processors when choosing sterilisation systems for their filling operations. To exploit the demand for minimally processed foods without synthetic chemicalpreservatives, manufacturers are exploring preservation methods such as high pressure systems, aseptic filling, ohmic heating, pulsed electric field, irradiation and bright light technologies.

The methods can also help to extend the shelf life of foods, opening new opportunities for processors by allowing them to consolidate operations and extend their distribution chains.

Under the agreement announced yesterday Steris will provide Sweden-based Tetra Pac with technical sterilisation technologies and related support. Tetra Pak will provide expertise in food andbeverage production and packaging.

The companies will conduct evaluations to determine the ability of Steris technologies to provide effective sterilisation solutions in a broad range of food and beverage applications. The developmentof the new systems will take place in both countries.

Steris provides infection prevention, decontamination and health science technologies for the healthcare and life sciences industries.
