The food safety and quality analysis company is lending support to a specialized chemistry seminar program at a North Carolina university.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has established an endowment at North Carolina State University’s (NC State) College of Sciences. The program will support the Department of Chemistry’s Distinguished Analytical Chemistry Seminar series.

Top talent

David C. Muddiman, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the school, said the program will bring leading thinkers to the school.

This series will attract top speakers who draw students and faculty from throughout our region to the NC State campus,” he said. “We are pleased with the commitment from Thermo Fisher Scientific to support this series; they clearly recognize the profound impact measurement science has on driving our discovery and understanding of the world around us.”

Muddiman added the endowment likely will serve students, and the world at large, by educating NC State students and staff on fundamentals as well as emerging technologies.

Merging innovation in contemporary measurement science, fostering collaborative inter-disciplinary science, and education will be the hallmarks of this new seminar series,” he said.

Sharing knowledge

Iain Mylchreest, vice president of research and development at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said furthering knowledge and promoting education are central to the company’s mission.

Only through the sharing of ideas and insights is it possible to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, and the goals of this series align closely with those of our company,” Mylchreest said.

The first events in the endowed program reportedly are planned to start in 2015. Details about the program are expected to be announced later this year.

Great to hear

I know David from his days at VCU. He is a pioneer in the application of mass spectrometry toward significant solutions in the biological sciences. There is a need for young scientists to learn and apply innovative solutions to food safety issues with analytical chemistry. It is great to hear that David will lead this seminar series at NCSU.
